Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction in which children have grave difficulty breathing. If not treated immediately, it may be fatal. As reported in a handbook prepared for school boards, "Canadian physicians report that the number of affected individuals is rising, and that by far the most common culprit is the peanut."

At St. Justin, Martyr, we have numerous students who have allergies that could cause an anaphylactic reaction. For many, the trigger is peanut products, but other nuts, shellfish, other foods and wasp stings can cause this reaction, too. For this reason, students are not allowed to share snacks. Our school community needs to keep these students safe.

Our staff regularly receives training in how to respond to an anaphylactic reaction but our best defense is always prevention. We thank you for your continued vigilance in sending only foods that are nut-free to school with your child. We and the families of the affected students, thank you very much for your vigilant attention, when you are packing lunches and snacks.

If the school buses are cancelled for the day, so is the Alphabet Kids lunch service as the drivers will not be able to get to the school safely. If your child is sent to school on a day when busses have been cancelled, please send a lunch from home. You will be credited on your next order.
